Our new pastor, Fr Babychan Arackathara MSFS, is a missionary of St. Francis de
Sales, originally from South India. After high school, he spent four years
discerning his religious vocation, then pursued a bachelor’s degree in philosophy
and arts before continuing his theological studies in Pune, India. He was ordained
to the priesthood on January 8, 1997.
His first assignment was in Namibia, Africa, in 1998, where he learned Afrikaans
(the local language), and offered pastoral assistance in the diocese of Keetmanshoop.
After his transfer to South Africa in 1999, besides being a pastor, he worked with
the prison population, offering spiritual and emotional support. In 2003, he was
elected as the Southern African representative of the International Commission of
Catholic Prison Pastoral Care. In 2009, he volunteered to be a full-time prison
chaplain and coordinated the work of the Prison Care Camp; Support Network, an NPO
under the auspices of the Catholic Church in South Africa. Along with a team of
volunteers, he developed the Restorative Justice Program to promote mediation
between offenders and their families and between offenders and victims. Father
Babychan traveled to different African countries to offer prison chaplains training
on Restorative Justice.
After spending 21 years in Africa, he arrived in San Antonio in July 2019 and was assigned as parochial vicar
to Holy Cross D’Hanis and St. John the Evangelist, Hondo. In 2020, he was appointed pastor of both Holy
Cross and St John the Evangelist. After serving five years in Hondo, he was assigned as pastor to St. Vincent
de Paul.
On May 2nd, we placed a 23 foot high Cross of the Apostolate in our prayer garden with the help of our building committee members and Fr. Joel and Deacon Jorge. The cross was blessed by Archbishop for public veneration on May 14th when Fr. Jorge Haro was ordained a priest.
